CUA50915 DIPLOMA IN PHOTOGRAPHY & PHOTO IMAGING
CUA50915 Diploma of Photography & Photo Imaging is a comprehensive photography course that will enable you to work across a range of professional areas, including portraiture, wedding, commercial, fashion, editorial, landscape, food, products and event photography.
The course will give you a solid understanding of how to light and capture images to suit any style or situation. This course offers regular industry excursions and location photo shoots, which will give you amazing opportunities for portfolio development. You will develop knowledge of current trends in photo imaging, learn to interpret assignment briefs, consult with clients to refine objectives, develop concepts, use a range of technologies and workflows to capture images, employ aesthetic, conceptual, compositional and technical skills and gain exposure to a variety of shooting styles.
You begin by learning basic photography fundamentals including assessing correct and optimal exposures, simple and sophisticated lighting and digital image capture. You will develop digital image manipulation, processing and post-production skills using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. This will enable you to create dynamic imagery through graphic effects and touch up your photos to build a professional and diverse portfolio of work.
You will develop an understanding and appreciation of the psychology of an image, and its deliberate construction, as well as principles of design. Other topics include digital asset management, colour management, folio production, business, freelancing, networking and handling cultural heritage images.
Emphasis is placed on all assessments being relevant to the current photographic industry. Major projects will allow you to showcase your unique, signature style. Final assessments include a portfolio and exhibition to help you begin to promote yourself as commercially viable artists and also serve as a valuable marketing tool for your career. Throughout the course there will be many opportunities for you to work with our students studying make-up and beauty, providing you with further opportunities and experience. This demanding, but rewarding, photography course can lead you to a successful career in the exciting world of professional photography.
Three days per week for a period of 12 months OR two evenings per week for a period of 12 months. Term breaks are scheduled in accordance with the ACT School Terms.
CUA50915 Diploma of Photo Imaging currently has two intakes per year – February & July. Evening programs are available.
Entry to this qualification is limited to those able to demonstrate photo imaging skills that support learning at Diploma level. You will need to:
- < Submit a portfolio of work, to demonstrate:
- < your ability to develop creative solutions for a range of different ideas and environments.
- < use professional equipment, including camera and lighting equipment.
- < use of electronic processing techniques and image manipulation techniques.
- < Attend an interview to demonstrate your knowledge of the industry, its trends and traditions.
Skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study. If you do not have any prior experience you may complete a short bridging course to develop these skills.
- Diploma students must complete 60 hours of workplace training.
- Work experience will help build confidence, as well as networking in the industry for continued work.
- CMA has countless work experience opportunities come in through the school throughout the year, however it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to attend and source work experience.
- Diploma in Photography & Photo Imaging students have access to CMA’s studio facilities, Mac Lab, complete with current, industry standard software and professional makeup facilities.
- Students have access to CMA’s online learning management system, providing access to assessment tasks, additional learning resources, demonstration videos, practical notes and procedures, online quizzes, forum discussion and ongoing trainer support.
- A selection of relevant books are available for research and reference.
You will be provided with a resource order form, outlining everything you need to purchase to begin studying at CMA. This will include:

In addition to this, CMA holds an annual graduation dinner, which costs no more than $110 per graduating student. Students may invite as many guests as they choose.
This is a kit of equipment designed to allow you to continue to practice outside of class hours, attend work experience and begin professional work within your field of study. The materials and equipment contained within these kits becomes your property once purchased. You are supplied with additional materials and equipment for use during class hours at CMA. The kit includes:

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Previous work experience or training courses may enable us to deem you competent in certain areas, which will allow exemption from some modules. This process is referred to as ‘Recognition of Prior Learning ‘ (RPL). As a Registered Training Organisation, delivering nationally recognised training, CMA can assist you with this process. Please contact the office to request an application form. Application for RPL must occur prior to course commencement.

People with CUA50915 Diploma of Photo Imaging are able to work in a range of commercial and artistic photo imaging disciplines. The qualification also prepares people for learning at higher levels, including Degree qualifications in photo imaging practice.
